Wasdale Pod Camping Trip April 2009

Mike, our chief Mountain Rescue co-ordinator at Head to the Hills checks out the latest mountain accommodation in Cumbria.

The sun beat down on Ambleside – everyone was out with their ice creams, enjoying the hills in the warm weather, looking forward to their BBQ’s and a cold pint.   I was busy working at Head to the Hills. But not for long! My girlfriend and I had a three-day holiday planned: our chance to enjoy the sun.

The plan was to walk to Wast Water from the Langdales, to ‘Thread the Needle’ on the way through, walk back to Langdale on the second day, with the final day spent walking back to Ambleside.  At Wast Water we were to stay in one of the National Trust’s Camping Pods. What’s a Pod? Basically a wooden shed. Yep, that’s it. But it does save carrying a tent, and it makes for a very different camping experience.  So we packed our lightweight OMM Adventure Light 20 packs on the Monday (the sun was still toasty warm!), and the weather forecast looked good.
